Švicarija

The front view of a large building, partly made of wood. Bushes of white flowers in front of it. Darkness. The windows on the building are illuminated.

Švicarija is a home for artists and bohemians. On the outside it is an Alpine homestead shaded by trees, while on the inside it’s a centre of modern creativity. It was also called a refuge for sinners by the great Slovenian writer Ivan Cankar, who, like many other artists, used to live and work here. If Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir were to have visited Ljubljana, then this is where they would have lived and worked. The former Hotel Tivoli, recently completely refurbished, now once again offers its premises to international and Slovenian artists. The creative centre functions within the International Centre of Graphic Arts, and has long been the heart of social life in Ljubljana. If you knock on one of the atelier doors, then perhaps you’ll be invited to have coffee with some artists while taking in one of the best views of the city.
